A Morning in Granbury

A Morning in Granbury

Granbury, Texas is only about 30 miles from my home, but sometimes you do not have to travel far to feel like you have gotten away.

I decided to spend some time in Granbury, not with a packed itinerary or a list of things I needed to see, but simply to slow down and see where the day would take me.

My first stop was Pam’s Restaurant.

I came in for a cup of coffee.

That was the plan, anyway.

But then I smelled breakfast.

I ordered the Friday special, eggs, toast, sausage, and hash browns. The food looked so good coming out of the kitchen, and it smelled even better. At that point, resisting seemed like a pretty unnecessary exercise.

So my cup of coffee turned into breakfast.

And honestly, I am glad it did.

One of the things I enjoy about stopping at local spots when I travel is that you get to see people in their normal patterns of life. They are not there to entertain tourists. They are just living their lives.

At Pam’s, the conversations around me were as ordinary and varied as life itself.

One conversation was about the aggressive behavior of car dealers. Another was about high water bills. Nearby, an older gentleman was talking about his workout at the gym that morning at 6:30.

Car dealers. Water bills. Early morning workouts.

Nothing particularly remarkable.

And that is exactly what made it remarkable to me.

These were little windows into the lives of people I did not know. For a few minutes, sitting there over breakfast and coffee, I got to listen to the rhythm of a community going about its morning.

That is one of the best things about traveling to a local place.

You do not just see the sights.

You get to see people living.

After breakfast, I decided to post up in the town Square.

Granbury Square

Granbury has one of those classic courthouse square layouts where everything seems to come back to the center. It really is a square, and it is a pretty cool place to spend some time.

There is a nice little gazebo where I found some shade and a quaint green bench that was reasonably comfortable. From there, I could sit, relax, do a little work, and take in everything happening around me.

There are lots of little stores and shops surrounding the Square. There are wineries, restaurants, a bank, and historic buildings on the corners.

One of the buildings that immediately caught my attention was the Historic Nutt House Hotel. The name alone makes you look twice, but the building itself is what really draws you in. The old stone walls, tall windows, and historic character fit perfectly with the feel of the Square.

I sat there for a while and watched Granbury go about its day.

Cars moving through the streets. People walking around the Square. Folks going into shops. Businesses opening their doors. People meeting friends and simply going about their morning.

There was plenty of activity, but it did not feel hectic.

I could work a little while still feeling like I was somewhere.

That is something I have come to appreciate more and more.

Sometimes you do not need to completely disconnect to enjoy a place. You just need to change your surroundings and give yourself permission to slow down.

After spending some time downtown, I headed over to the beach on Lake Granbury.

It was a completely different side of Granbury, and I really liked the contrast.

The lake has a really nice setup. There is a long pier that stretches out over the water, giving you a chance to walk out into the lake and take in the view.

There was plenty of activity on the water. Boats were moving across the lake. Jet skis were cruising around. People were out enjoying water skiing.

Along the shoreline, there are homes and lakefront properties, but there is also a nice little beach with sand and plenty of room for people to set up their chairs and spend some time by the water.

It felt relaxing.

Refreshing.

There was something about sitting near the water and watching people enjoy themselves that made it easy to slow down.

The pier, the beach, the boats, the open water and the people scattered along the shoreline created a completely different atmosphere from the historic downtown Square.

And that contrast is what I really enjoyed about Granbury.

You can start your morning at a local restaurant, sitting among people talking about their everyday lives.

You can walk over to the Square, find a shaded bench, open your laptop and get some work done while watching the town move around you.

Then you can head to the lake, sit by the water and watch boats and jet skis pass by.

The Square gives you the character of Granbury.

The lake gives you the space to breathe.

Sitting there under the gazebo, I realized I had stopped being concerned about what I was supposed to do next. I had my laptop, a comfortable enough bench, some shade, and a view of the Square.

I took a little time to just sit there and take it all in.

Sometimes travel is not about finding the next attraction. Sometimes it is about finding a place where you are comfortable enough to stop moving.

That morning, Granbury gave me that place.

I was not trying to see everything.

I was simply trying to be there.

And for one morning in Granbury, that was enough.
